Participating Library Systems in the United States |
Libraries Online! is an initiative of the Microsoft Corporation, The American Library Association (ALA), and the Technology Resource Institute to research and develop innovative approaches for extending information technologies to underserved communities. The Libraries Online! project begins its second year of providing public access to the Internet, multimedia technology and current software applications. Studies have shown that low income people and those living in rural areas and inner cities are least likely to have this type of access. Over 200 branch libraries in forty-one library systems around the United States have received $15 million of cash grants, staff training, computer hardware, Microsoft software and technical support to address specific community needs. A central focus is reaching out to families, small business owners, students and others who may not otherwise have access to information technologies. Currently, unsolicited applications for Libraries Online! funding are not being accepted. |
