News Coverage

As one of the most community oriented, focused and creative public library systems in the country, the Memphis/Shelby County Public Library (MSCPL) continues to set the standards for services to preschoolers, young people, job seekers, social service agencies, small business owners and entrepreneurs, genealogy researchers, users of new technologies, and their diverse community of library users. MSCPLs mission is to satisfy each customers need to know by expanding and strengthening their resources in an effort to provide information services to everyone.

The Libraries Online! (LOL) project facilitated MSCPL in furthering their mission by enabling them to provide 9 of their 21 branch locations with a hub and 2 computer workstations that have world wide web and internet access. The nine LOL sites are located in inner city, low-income neighborhoods that have the greatest economic challenges facing residents. The two training components of the LOL projects in Memphis include classroom instruction and practice sessions for both staff and patrons. Local teen High School students have been recruited to assist library staff with patron trainings and one-on-one assistance.
